About M.A.P.
MISSION
Metro Atlanta Project is a Christian ministry that empowers teens to reach out to low-income senior citizens in Atlanta by addressing their roofing needs.
VISION
Rebuilding a city, one life at at time.
In just five days' time this past summer, despite record heat and torrential rains, M.A.P. re-roofed 16 homes for elderly, low-income families across Atlanta. The volunteers came together from seven churches here in Atlanta, churches from Augusta, Covington, and Tennessee, Wilderness Works, and Uplift Ministries to participate in M.A.P. All together, M.A.P. removed several layers of old shingles, repaired rotten decking, laid new felt paper, hammered hundreds of pounds of nails, and re-shingled the 16 homes. What a feat to be proud of! Each year, it is truly amazing to see the difference M.A.P. makes in the lives and relationships of the youth, adults, and families as volunteers work together to cross the economic and racial lines that divide our society.
HISTORY
M.A.P. began in 1999 after a local church youth ministry from Northside United Methodist Church took a mission trip to Nashville to do inner-city service projects. While there, they realized that Atlanta had a similar need for people to band together and serve their area. That year, approximately 40 youth along with numerous adults, local agencies, and community corporate sponsors began to seek out and meet the needs of many in our Atlanta neighborhoods. At first, our efforts focused on small home repairs and renovations. Between 1999 and 2002, M.A.P. undertook 56 of these type projects. Then in 2003, we began focusing our efforts specifically on roofing after learning that roofing had been identified as one of the major needs of elderly and disadvantaged citizens in Atlanta. To date, M.A.P. has replaced 111 roofs, providing families with a free, solid, and stable investment in their home that will last 20 or more years.
